STCW is an abbreviation for: Standards of Training, Certification and Watch-keeping.
It is a globally recognised qualification and covers 4 training topics: Basic Firefighting, Personal Survival, Personal Safety and Social Responsibility, and Elementary First Aid (as listed above).
The qualification has to be renewed every 5 years by undergoing the training, even if you are a highly competent sailor.
The purpose is so that you are trained to keep yourself, your crew members and passengers safe in case of emergency.
STCW 95 is considered basic training.
